Septic Backing Up? Here's What to Do First

A backup is an emergency - here is how to limit the damage while help is on the way.

Do this first

  1. Stop running water. No laundry, dishes, or long showers - every gallon you send down makes the backup worse.
  2. Keep people and pets away from any sewage in the yard or home - it is a health hazard.
  3. Don't add chemicals or "septic treatments." They won't clear a full tank or a failed field and can make diagnosis harder.
  4. Call for service. Most backups need a pump-out and an eyes-on diagnosis, same day.

Common causes

  • A tank that is simply full and overdue for pumping
  • A clog in the inlet, outlet, or the line to the house
  • A failing drain field that can't absorb anymore
  • A failed effluent or lift pump (on systems that have one)

If it was just a full tank, a pump-out usually fixes it that day. If the drain field is failing, pumping buys you time while we plan the real repair - we will tell you which it is before you spend money twice.
